H2 2026 Pilot Initiative

Professional onboarding gets people in.
Social onboarding keeps people there.

UPWARD Rooted is an H2 2026 pilot initiative exploring more intentional approaches to social integration, local connection, and social sustainability for internationally mobile professionals and globally mobile teams.

The organizational problem

Talent strategies shouldn't end at the front door.

Organizations invest heavily in recruiting and relocating talent β€” competitive packages, professional onboarding, relocation logistics, housing support. The professional side clicks into place quickly.

But professional success becomes fragile when people lack meaningful support systems outside work. High-performance environments consume emotional, cognitive, and social energy. Sustainable performance depends on sustainable personal ecosystems β€” the part most relocation programs leave to chance.

Beyond housing, schools, and hobby groups, UPWARD Rooted helps people more effectively build compatible social systems that sustain demanding professional transitions.

Why Helsinki?

The pilot begins in Helsinki β€” a city with exceptional professional opportunities, but where meaningful social integration can be difficult for adults arriving later in life.

The shift

From social opportunity generation
β†’ to social opportunity optimization.

Traditional approaches

  • β€”More activity
  • β€”More events
  • β€”More introductions
  • β€”More participation

UPWARD Rooted

  • β†’Better relational fit
  • β†’Lower-friction interaction
  • β†’Recurring connection
  • β†’Compatibility-informed introductions
  • β†’Socially sustainable integration

Structured to improve the conversion of social effort into meaningful local connection.

The 8-week pilot

Two H2 2026 cohorts. Sixty to ninety participants each.

Cohorts run across multiple organizations simultaneously β€” intentionally ecosystem-based, not isolated within a single employer.

Cohort One

Aug 24 – Oct 16, 2026

Helsinki Β· cross-company cohort

Cohort Two

Oct 26 – Dec 18, 2026

Helsinki Β· cross-company cohort

8-week structure

  1. Week 0

    Onboarding & compatibility mapping

Participants complete relational onboarding; compatibility signals are mapped to inform early introductions.

  2. Weeks 1–4

    Guided low-friction interaction

Curated small-group experiences, structured conversations, and compatibility-informed introductions.

  3. Weeks 5–8

Reinforced recurring interaction & ecosystem integration

Repeated meetings, recurring circles, and warm pathways into broader local support systems.

Rather than isolating interaction within single organizations, cohorts are intentionally ecosystem-based to help participants build broader local support systems outside work.

Activities are positioned as social investments after relational potential is identified β€” not random networking.

Early outcomes

Early experiments show meaningful conversion.

92%

Repeated interaction rates after initial connection

87%

Six-month social retention among active participants

These are early outcomes from small-scale experimental (2–6 month) formats and are not yet presented as formal longitudinal research.

For the upcoming pilots, custom metrics and exploration areas include newcomer retention, local attachment, employee sustainability, ecosystem participation, recurring connection formation, and other validated compatibility and retention indicators, as requested by partner organizations.

Live experiments

The pilot is informed by ongoing live experiments.

What previous experiments revealed

  • β€” Compatibility matters more than interaction volume.
  • β€” Ambiguity creates social friction; structure reduces it.
  • β€” Repeated interaction is what actually builds attachment.
  • β€” Many adults do not lack social opportunity; they lack effective pathways toward meaningful local connection.
UPWARD Rooted emerged from ongoing live experiments, salons, structured conversations, and social integration pilots developed by Laura Smith through UPWARD β€” originally to facilitate her own social integration within Helsinki, and expanded to serve other immigrants, trailing partners, and adults in life transition as the early experiments proved exceptionally impactful for many beyond herself.

Pilot partnership

Two pilot tiers, intentionally lightweight.

Current pilots are intentionally designed as lightweight, high-touch experiential cohorts for organizations exploring more intentional approaches to integration and employee sustainability.

Starter Pilot

€3K – €5K

Coworking spaces, startup ecosystems, smaller international teams. (5-20 participants per pilot partner)

Organizational Pilot

€7.5K – €15K

Larger employers, relocation programs, universities, scaling global teams (20+ participants per pilot partner)
